The Growing Challenge of Vibrio in Shrimp Hatcheries
Shrimp hatcheries operate in an environment where small changes can have major impacts. Increasing production intensity, changing water conditions, and biological stressors can create opportunities for opportunistic pathogens—especially Vibrio species—to impact larval performance and survival.
A recent Zeigler LinkedIn poll asked hatchery professionals: “What’s your biggest Hatchery Challenge right now?” The results highlighted the industry’s current priorities:
- Vibrio – 32%
- Cost – 27%
- Water Quality – 23%
- Survival – 18%
The results reinforce a key reality: managing Vibrio pressure remains one of the most significant challenges facing modern shrimp hatcheries.
While disease events can develop quickly, effective preparation starts much earlier. Establishing stronger larvae through advanced nutrition, functional support, and targeted probiotic delivery can help hatcheries improve resilience before challenges appear.
A Complete Approach: Rescue, Remediate, and Vpak
Zeigler’s Ultra liquid feed diets were developed to provide more than essential nutrition. They combine advanced liquid feed technology with functional ingredients and targeted probiotic support designed to strengthen larval health throughout critical early life stages.
The system incorporates three key components:
Rescue: A proprietary blend of Bacillus strains selected for anti-Vibrio activity. Rescue supports the establishment of beneficial bacteria, helps create a more favorable microbial environment within the shrimp gut, and improves survival and performance under bacterial stress.
Remediate: A functional microbial solution designed to help reduce ammonia and organic waste. Delivered through the liquid fraction of Zeigler’s Ultra feeds, Remediate disperses into the rearing water during feeding to support improved environmental conditions.
Vpak: A blend of functional ingredients designed to enhance immune function, improve nutrient utilization, and increase resistance to oxidative stress—supporting overall larval health and performance.
Together, these technologies create a comprehensive strategy that supports nutrition, gut health, water quality, and stress resistance.
Microencapsulation Technology: Precision Delivery Where It Matters
In hatchery nutrition, the effectiveness of functional ingredients depends not only on what is delivered—but how it is delivered.
Zeigler developed a proprietary cold-process microencapsulation technology for incorporating probiotics into liquid larval feeds. This approach helps preserve probiotic spore viability while allowing consistent, targeted delivery directly to the larval gut.
Within EZ Larva Ultra and EZ Artemia Ultra, Rescue probiotics are enclosed within microcapsules designed for targeted gut delivery. This allows viable probiotic spores to reach the animal at effective levels when fed according to protocol.
At the same time, Remediate is incorporated into the liquid fraction of the feed, allowing it to disperse into the culture environment during feeding.
The result is a coordinated delivery system that supports both the shrimp and the surrounding culture environment.
Proven Performance Under Vibrio Challenge Conditions
At Zeigler’s Aquaculture Research Center (ZARC), controlled feeding trials were conducted to evaluate how advanced nutrition performs under real-world stress conditions.
In a Vibrio challenge trial, two diet programs were compared:
- A control diet containing no probiotics
- A probiotic-supported diet containing Rescue within the microcapsules and Remediate in the liquid fraction
During the trial:
- EZ Larva Ultra was included at 50% of the diet during the zoea and mysis stages
- EZ Artemia Ultra replaced Artemia nauplii during mysis and post-larval stages
- Culture water was treated twice daily with Rescue throughout the study
At PL9, shrimp were challenged with Vibrio parahaemolyticus AHPND at 5 × 10⁴ CFU/mL for 24 hours.
After 72 hours, survival results showed a significant difference:
Control Group: 50% survival
Probiotic Treatment Group: 83.3% survival
The probiotic-supported diet program delivered a 33.3% improvement in survival compared with the control.
These results demonstrate that probiotic delivery through Zeigler’s liquid feed technology supported stronger larval performance under pathogen challenge conditions. The findings also suggest that consistent feed-based probiotic delivery may provide advantages beyond water treatment alone by helping establish beneficial microbial populations within the shrimp gut.
Building Resilience Before the Challenge
Disease pressure can change quickly—but larval resilience is built over time.
Through advanced nutrition, functional ingredients, probiotic support, and precision liquid feed technology, Zeigler’s Ultra diets help hatcheries establish stronger foundations for performance before challenges impact production.
With proven research from ZARC and validated hatchery performance data, EZ Larva Ultra and EZ Artemia Ultra provide a science-driven approach to improving consistency, supporting survival, and helping hatcheries prepare for the challenges ahead.
